Pacific Rim Fandom
While we all love the Pacific Rim series, the movies, the action and the stories they tell, the fandom goes a lot deeper than just that. There's a lot more fun to be had immersing yourself in this fandom then just watching the big blockbuster movies. It's important to get the full experience of the fandom so you don't miss out on some of the coolest parts of being a fan. Things like ranking kaiju, placing different jaegers against threats from other monster-verse titles and creating 3-D animations are interesting parts of the fandom and are a lot of fun to look into and create material about. Delving deeper can help you enjoy Pacific Rim long after the four hours and two minutes of film time are up.
While we know the films have their own kaiju ranking, fans like to create their own rules, wondering who would win in a head-to-head of two of the series most powerful beasts. Or who's the weakest and would lose the easiest. Do they include the recently born kaiju? Do they go based mostly on the power ranking? Some work off the size of the monster and some go off special abilities, like the one Leatherback possesses. All questions that can be answered by reading some of the interesting comparisons made by fans. power ranking videos are all over YouTube (DanCo, 2024) and give a good look at what kaiju comes out as the strongest. One of the other really interesting debates fans have been having is could one of the premier jaegers of the series (Gypsy Danger) best another series main monster like Godzilla (GodofWar1234, R/whowouldwin on reddit:... minus one). Some fans argue Gypsy has superior speed and abilities to Godzilla, but Godzilla has size and strength on the bot. Debates like this bring the fandom together, while also creating good natured debate over two beloved characters. It allows for fans to flex their knowledge of strengths and weaknesses of the different characters and form different camps for each combatant. Fans build who scenarios around the fight, asking "What if..." questions to up the ante.
One of the last and most impressive things fans do is go beyond fan art and beyond written fiction and create fan made movies and animations. It takes a lot of time and effort from creators to do this, and the size, scale and complexity of the models makes it even more difficult. But animators do it well, capturing the huge nature of the subjects and rendering the machine-like movement of the jaegers. It's one of the most impressive ways to create what is essentially fan art and is totally overlooked if not posted about in online spaces. You miss out on some amazing creativity when you miss projects like this. Fans spend hours in blender creating new scenes (Kamesh, Pacific rim fan made blender animation) and re-creating movie scenes.
In conclusion, participating in the fandom doesn't have to stop at the movies or novels. It can continue into debates, power rankings and animations. The intense nature and power of the subjects make these kinds of debates really interesting and makes you think outside the box about the different kaiju and jaegers. The animation also exposes you to just how talented the community is, and if you don't seek it out it can fly right under your radar. It's a lot of fun to dive headfirst into these spaces and learn and see so much about your favorite series.
